"Modernisme is a bit of a first. It is the only true contemporary art gallery in the area and should serve as a destination for art enthusiasts from all over Charleston", West Of Newspaper, September '06.
MODERNISME, The Gallery at Avondale offers world class contemporary art that remains fresh and edgy. The Gallery represents seven local and four national artists in the mediums of oil and acrylic paintings, fine art photography, hand crafted wood furniture and wood vessels.
The word Modernisme in Catalan, (not to be confused with modernism) is a Catalan cultural movement led by deeply individualistic and anti-traditionalist intellectuals who, roughly from 1888 to 1911, attempted to update Catalan arts and ideas so as to uplift Catalan culture to a par with other European cultures.
Such renewal included a distinctive style of Art Nouveau in architecture and plastic arts, but also the introduction of Symbolism, Decadence,Nietzschean Vitalism, Parnassianismand other contemporaneous movements into Catalan literature and philosophy, a modernizing transformation of Catalan traditional music, and so forth.
Catalan Modernistes, not unlike Symbolists and Decadents such as Charlest Baudelaire or even Oscar Wilde, largely rejected bourgeois values, which they thought to be the opposite of art. Consequently, they adopted two stances: they either set themselves apart from society in a bohemian or culturists attitude or they attempted to use art to change society.
Modernisme, The Gallery at Avondale is located in the "hot spot" off the peninsula, in the popular section of West Ashley commonly referred to as Avondale Point. Avondale Point has ample parking and offers unique boutiques, top restaurants and lounges, and stylish businesses. Situated directly next door to Al Di La at 21 Magnolia Road off Highway 17.
